Summary:Ionization balance and nucleation in the plasma, which is formed in welding fumes from gas metal arc welding, are studied. It is demonstrated, that large number of nuclei causes the replace of volume thermal ionization by ionization via nucleus surface. The equation for change in Gibbs free energy during nucleation should be also replaced. Absence of the easy-ionizable additional agent forces the iron atoms to execute both functions: a source of ionization and a source of nucleation. As a result nucleation occurs during short time, because condensable material promptly ends. •The subject of study is the nucleation zone of welding fume from GMAW.•Absence of alkali metals causes the large number of nuclei which collect the free electrons.•As a result the volume impact ionization is replaced by ionization via nucleus surface.•Accordingly, the energy of nucleation is changed.
