Summary: | Stainless steel is an important engineering material that is difficult to cut by conventional methods. However, it can be easily machined by laser cutting. Laser cutting is a widely used advanced thermal machining process. It is capable of high-accuracy cutting of almost any material with complex geometries. The present study is focused on investigating the laser cutting of AISI 304 material. The influence of process parameters, namely, laser power, cutting speed and gas pressure, on surface roughness of laser cut AISI 304 material is studied. It is found that the laser power and gas pressure are the significant parameters. There is a decrease in roughness with an increase in laser power and gas pressure. As cutting speed increases, there is an increase in surface roughness. Optimisation of process parameters is also performed using desirability approach to minimise surface roughness. |
