Pentachlorophenyl organomercury compounds

The following pentachlorophenyl derivatives of mercury have been prepared; (C 6Cl 5) 2Hg, C 6Cl 5HgCl, C 6Cl 5HgCH 3 and C 8Cl 5HgC 6H 5. Acid attack on the latter two species leads to scission of the C 5Cl 5Hg and C 6H 5Hg bonds respectively, in agreement with the C 6F 5-Hg compounds. Like the la...

Summary:The following pentachlorophenyl derivatives of mercury have been prepared; (C 6Cl 5) 2Hg, C 6Cl 5HgCl, C 6Cl 5HgCH 3 and C 8Cl 5HgC 6H 5. Acid attack on the latter two species leads to scission of the C 5Cl 5Hg and C 6H 5Hg bonds respectively, in agreement with the C 6F 5-Hg compounds. Like the latter, these pentachlorophenyl derivatives have a very high thermal stability. The ease of preparation and cost-differential compared to the flourine derivative and the possibility for metal—ring hahalogen interaction suggest this grouping as deserving of further investigation.
