To this end, this study developed a game-based negotiation mechanism, and further investigated its influences on student learning in terms of performance and behaviors during the learning process. The findings revealed that the negotiation mechanism improved learning performance and fostered a better regulation. Some implications and design issues for game-based learning were also discussed. •Negotiation mechanism is used to enhance game-based learning.•Negotiation mechanism can foster co-regulation between students and systems.•Negotiation mechanism can enhance students' performance and goal-setting.•Negotiation mechanism can foster students' regulation behaviors.
