Summary:Jannis Kountouras and colleagues discuss evidence linking Helicobacter pylori infection to metabolic syndrome and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease. For H pylori infection, the association with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease is supported by a small number of case-control studies.2,3 In contrast, the association between obesity and mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease is based on several prospective cohort studies and is further supported by several clinical trials.1 Similarly, the association between obesity and neuropathy is supported by findings from several cross-sectional studies and is further supported by uncontrolled intervention studies.1 In summary, inadequate data support the role of H pylori infection in CNS and PNS injury, and further study is required to determine whether this is a promising new area. All other authors declare no competing interests. 1 LM Hinder, BC Callaghan, EL Feldman, Neurological consequences of obesity, Lancet Neurol, Vol. 16, 2017, 465-477 2 J Kountouras, M Tsolaki, M Boziki, Helicobacter pylori, infection and mild cognitive impairment, Eur J Neurol, Vol. 14, 2007, 976-982 3 J Kountouras, M Tsolaki, E Gavalas, Helicobacter pylori, infection and Alzheimer disease, Neurology, Vol. 66, 2006, 938-940 4 B Gelaye, S Sacco, WJ Brown, HL Nitchie, R Ornello, BL Peterlin, Body composition status and the risk of migraine: a meta-analysis, Neurology, Vol. 88, 2017, 1795-1804 5 BL Peterlin, S Sacco, C Bernecker, AI Scher, Adipokines and migraine: a systematic review, Headache, Vol. 56, 2016, 622-644
