Summary:This work reports an optical absorption study of a rhodium(III)-doped and an iridium(III)-doped sodium chloride single crystal. A crystal field calculation including spin-orbit coupling is used to fit the observed levels. The results were compared with literature data for rhodium(III) and iridium(III) in several other matrices. This comparison indicates that a qualitative correlation exists between the semi-empirical crystal field parameters for these octahedral complexes and the transition metal-ligand distances in the different hosts. Thus, an increase of the metal-ligand distance leads to a smaller nephelauxetic effect and a smaller value of the 10 Dq parameter.
