Summary:A new methacrylate-based packing with quaternary amine functional groups for the analysis of inorganic anions by ion chromatography is described. Columns packed with this new material work for both suppressor-based and single-column ion chromatography methods. A variety of eluents such as carbonate–bicarbonate, phthalic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid are compatible with this column. The packing is stable under severe conditions such as switching from high pH to low pH eluents, or vice versa. The hydrophilic nature of the packing provides excellent peak shape for all common inorganic anions, including hydrophobic anions such as nitrate and iodide. The performance of the column with different eluents is demonstrated along with the applications using both single-column and suppressor-based ion chromatography systems.
