Summary:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel radio over fiber system that provides different gigabit orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals transmission for wired and wireless networks using a conventional reflective semiconductor optical amplifier and a single‐arm Mach–Zehnder modulator (MZM). To halve sampling speed of electronics and to simplify a radio frequency front‐end design, the proposed scheme adopts Hermitian symmetry to generate the wireless signal. It was reported that using the proposed scheme, 5‐Gbps 16‐quadrature‐amplitude‐modulation‐OFDM wired and 1.17‐Gbps quadrature phase‐shift keying OFDM wireless signals were successfully transmitted through 23‐km standard single mode fiber link. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
