Nuclear medium corrections and chiral cancellation in the pion-nucleus optical potential

The near cancellation of the pi-nuclear contributions from the lowest order non-linear terms in the Weinberg chiral lagrangian for pion-nucleon systems is re-examined in the presence of nuclear medium polarization in a popular model for these corrections. It is demonstrated that this near cancellati...

Summary:The near cancellation of the pi-nuclear contributions from the lowest order non-linear terms in the Weinberg chiral lagrangian for pion-nucleon systems is re-examined in the presence of nuclear medium polarization in a popular model for these corrections. It is demonstrated that this near cancellation persists to all orders in isobar-hole pairs in spite of the further enhancement of the already large individual contributions to the S-wave pion-nucleus optical potential.
