Summary:•Ho:CaF2 nanopowders were successfully synthesized by direct-precipitation.•Highly transparent Ho:CaF2 polycrystalline ceramics were fabricated by HP method.•The in-line transmittance of Ho:CaF2 ceramics reaches at 89% at 1300nm.•Spectral properties Ho3+ ion in CaF2 transparent ceramics were investigated. In this paper, high optical quality of Ho:CaF2 (2at%) transparent ceramics based on nanopowders were fabricated by hot-pressed method successfully. Ho:CaF2 ceramics with the average size of about 500nm were obtained at 800°C for 1h. The transmittance of the sample measured to be 89% at the wavelength of 1300nm. The reduced transmittance in the near-IR range is likely due to the residual pores in the ceramics. The spectral properties of Ho:CaF2 ceramics demonstrated that there is a strong emission peak around 2030nm under the excitation of 640nm.
