Summary:CdIn2S4 nanosheets with cubic spinel phase and high crystallinity were prepared in the mercaptoacetic acid-assisted hydrothermal process without the help of templates or surfactants. The images of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy show that the nanosheets obtained adopt a quasi-rounded morphology with the diameter of about 80nm. Moreover, the CdIn2S4 nanosheets exhibit an optical threshold at 585nm and a relatively narrow emission at 858nm with full width at half maximum of approximately 15nm, implying that these nanosheets may be used as a high color purity emitter, which is very encouraging for potential application in the fields of light emitting diodes. Finally, the corresponding mechanism of CdIn2S4 nanosheets was preliminarily discussed. Quasi-rounded CdIn2S4 nanosheets were simply prepared in a hydrothermal process by using mercaptoacetic acid as capping agent and linker. [Display omitted] •CdIn2S4 nanosheets were prepared in the simple hydrothermal process.•CdIn2S4 nanosheets exhibit a narrow emission.•Mercaptoacetic acid serves as a capping agent and linker in the process.
