Summary:This communication presents the data on the unusual conversion of 1,2-dichloroethane over ruthenium-oxychloride catalyst. It was found that dichloroethane was dehydrochlorinated at moderate temperatures with release of ethylene and, unexpectedly, the products of destructive oxidation, namely CO and CO2. •Novel reaction of vinyl chloride with H2O with formation of ethylene was revealed.•Ethylene formed over Ru-catalyst with a likely participation of electrophylic oxygen•H2O addition accelerated the reaction and increased the selectivity to ethylene.
