Summary:Positron annihilation measurements of the annealing of vacancies in quenched copper crystals are reported. Changes in the Doppler-broadened positron annihilation line, together with previous residual electrical resistivity measurements on similarly quenched samples, indicate that vacancies from clusters as soon as they become mobile. The full effects were not observed until a layer depleted of vacancies, formed during the quench, was removed.
