Studies on insect ( Periplaneta americana L.) phosphofructokinase

1. 1. The presence of phosphofructokinase activity in different tissues from the cockroach ( Periplaneta americana) has been investigated. 2. 2. The coxal muscles enzyme was studied at different F6P concentrations, and an apparent K m of 6·9 × 10 −5 M was calculated. 3. 3. The enzyme shows an optimu...

Summary:1. 1. The presence of phosphofructokinase activity in different tissues from the cockroach ( Periplaneta americana) has been investigated. 2. 2. The coxal muscles enzyme was studied at different F6P concentrations, and an apparent K m of 6·9 × 10 −5 M was calculated. 3. 3. The enzyme shows an optimum activity at pH 7·5. 4. 4. ATP strongly inhibits enzyme activity. 5. 5. 5′-AMP, Pi, NH 4 + caused a marked increase in enzyme activity, while the enzyme is inhibited by ATP. 6. 6. 3′5′-AMP (cyclic) at 0·22 mM ATP partially increases enzyme activity. 7. 7. The above reported data strongly suggest that the enzyme is a site of hormonal control in glycolysis.
