Summary:The scrubbing efficiency of aerosol in the submerged jet is important for assessing nuclear power plants' radioactivity in severe accidents (SAs). In this research, several experiments were carried out for pool pressure, inlet flow rate, and submergence to systematically explore the scrubbing characteristics in the submerged jet. The experimental results show that there is a difference in the scrubbing efficiency of different flow regions. In the submerged gas jet, with the continuous dissipation of gas momentum, the scrubbing mechanism changes from being dominated by inertial effects to the couple by diffusion and inertial effects. The gas velocity is the main factor affecting the scrubbing efficiency, which indicates that the Stokes number can be used to predict the scrubbing efficiency. Meanwhile, at the same injection velocity, the scrubbing efficiency increases with the increasing pool pressure, which may be caused by the change in the gas flow characteristics. To characterize the effect of pool pressure, the Weber number is used to describe the behavior of gas flow characteristics. The results show that the scrubbing efficiency in the inertial jet regime can be well predicted by using We·Stk. In addition, the equation using submergence as a variable can also better predict the scrubbing efficiency under upward jet conditions, but it still needs relevant data to verify. [Display omitted] •The scrubbing characteristics in the submerged gas jet under high pool pressure conditions were explored.•The flow characteristics of the submerged gas jet under different flow rates were analyzed.•The scrubbing effect in different flow regions was systematically analyzed.•An empirical correlation between the scrubbing efficiency and product of Weber and Stokes number was proposed.•The correlation was validated against experimental data from this work and the literature.
