Reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and chemical labelling in characterization of polypropylene/PMMA thin film composites

Summary:The combination of RAIR, TEM, and chemical derivitization describe the chemical composition and spatial distribution of a 50 Å PMMA coating on polypropylene substrates. The RAIR spectrum shows the ester carbonyl and strong combination absorptions from the PMMA coating. The TEM micrographs of this coating after chemical tagging of the ester groups with silver ions show a thin band of silver particles imbedded in the outermost layer of the polypropylene/PMMA composite.
