Summary:The growth of α-HgI2 platelets from vapour was studied. The crystals were obtained in the presence of organic compounds and/or noble gases. The changes of chemical composition and pressure of gases in ampoules were observed. The mechanism of growth process was related to the result of HgI2 vapour transport rate measurements. Purity and stoichiometry of the applied HgI2 samples were investigated. Morphology and crystal structure of the crystal were observed. A number of detectors was manufactured and tested.
