Summary:Dehulled lupin seeds of two Polish varieties (low-protein SONET variety, high-protein JUNO variety) were tested as protein components replacing 50% of soya extract meal in feeding mixtures for young broiler chickens. Dehulling improves the nutritional value of lupin seeds as the level of nitrogen-containing substances is by 27% higher in the processed seeds than in original ones. Chickens' production performance depended also on the variety used. Chickens fed the JUNO variety seeds reached a live weight of 2.332 kg on Day 40, which was comparable with control animals (2.337 kg). However, chickens fed SONET seeds had significantly lower average weight (2.280 kg) than control animals. Feed consumption per kg of weight gain at this level of average live weight was as follows: 1.89 kg (controls), 1.85 kg (Group fed JUNO seeds), and 1.93 kg (Group fed SONET seeds). In conclusion, dehulled lupin seeds of some varieties may replace soya extract meal in compound feeds for broiler chickens.
