Forward scattering of resonant radiation as a function of applied magnetic field — theoretical study of the hyperfine lines of the sodium doublet

The forward scattering signal of resonant laser radiation is calculated to third order in the laser field strength for a two-level system with arbitrary angular momentum. The application to the hyperfine structure of sodium D-lines is in agreement with the experiments of Gawlik et al. (1974), origin...

Summary:The forward scattering signal of resonant laser radiation is calculated to third order in the laser field strength for a two-level system with arbitrary angular momentum. The application to the hyperfine structure of sodium D-lines is in agreement with the experiments of Gawlik et al. (1974), originally interpreted in terms of an induced hexadecapole moment. Our results are obtained without invoking this hypothesis.
