Summary:Specific surface areas of suspended charged particles can be derived from the measurement of the negative adsorption of co-ions. The method is based upon the diffuse double layer theory. It has the principal advantage that no molecular cross section of an adsorbing molecule or ion needs to be known. Equations are given for the computation of the surface area from the relative increase in concentration of co-ions due to negative adsorption for the case of flat surfaces without double layer overlap. The influence of surface potential and surface curvature is discussed. The method is illustrated with AgI suspensions with areas between 1 and 5 m. 2/gram. The surface areas thus obtained agree within 10% with the areas obtained from double layer capacitance.
