Summary:Doubly charged molecular ions of methane and methane- d 4 were formed in a double focusing mass spectrometer by the charge stripping technique. Their life-times are greater than 3 μs. The double ionization energy of methane was determined to be 30.6 eV, which is in contrast to the previously reported value of 40.7 eV, obtained by the Auger spectroscopy method.
