Summary:Oscillating photoluminescence in the Ce(III)/Ce(IV) catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction is described. No quantitative data can be obtained from luminescence intensity measurements, due to quenching and inner filter effects. From lifetime measurements, it is possible to evaluate the quenching effect, which is attributed to bromate ions that oxidize the excited Ce(III) species. Some consequences are discussed.
