Summary:Reagent grade molybdenum trioxide, used as a target material for the preparation of 99 m Tc contains minute traces of rhenium which may compromise the purity of the extracted 99 m Tc. A simple method based on the selective absorption of rhenium on to activated charcoal has been developed to purify the MoO 3 before neutron activation. The process does not remove tungsten, another common impurity in MoO 3, but this limitation is not significant if the precaution is taken of discarding the first 99 m Tc extract.
