Summary:Artificial knee replacement is one of the surgical method to substitute the damaged part by metals or plastic models to allow for normal movement of the knee. The main reasons for failure of the implant are osteolysis due to wear debris. Biomaterials like titanium and its alloy, Polypropylene, chromium and its alloys are used for replacement. Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is the most widely used among them. It possess better property as compared to other material mentioned above. In order to increase the wear resistance of UHMWPE, an innovative method of cross linking is introduced. Cross linking by using organic peroxide as the initiator is the efficient approach of cross linking. Dicumyl peroxide is used as the initiator. The primary aim of this project is to reduce the wear rate of UHMWPE by cross-linking and compare its properties with conventional UHMWPE and also to check its biocompatibility.
