Summary:Aluminium metal matrix composites (Al-MMCs) have astounding properties such as high erosion and wear resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, with a relatively low cost and have multiple applications in construction, marine, aerospace, defence and automotive sector. These material can be reinforced with ceramic materials in numerous way to enhance their mechanical and frictional behaviour. Reinforcing materials such as alumina, silicon carbide, boron carbide, and aluminium oxide are mainly used more frequently. Different reinforcements have unique effects on aluminium composites confirmed by diverse research community. This paper presents a review of the effects of various reinforcements on the tribological properties of Al-MMCs.
