Summary:In modern boring related industry, the issue of mechanical vibrations induced due to high over hang of the tool has emerged as a major challenge for the researchers. In this paper, an innovative chatter suppression method based on particle damping technique is attempted to reduce chatter in boring tool and thereby study the improvement in surface finish and tool wear. Granules of steel are used. The granules were filled into the boring bar through the hole drilled at the rear of the boring tool. Experiments were conducted with different tool overhang values, spindle speeds and feed rates. It was therefore established that particle damping plays a leading role in improving surface finish and reducing tool wear in boring operation
