Summary:Biomaterials, is supposed to be the subject of extreme importance as it plays a crucial role in diminishing various human body parts implants problems occurred due to accidents and injuries by utilizing effective bio-friendly material and their combinations. Tribology also comes into play when the implants exceed their service life and in the higher age of the population. It is so important to balance the biomaterials used in the implant with their long-lasting tribological behavior while designing implant prosthesis. Surface treatment methods can be used successfully in enhancing the tribological behavior and service life of biomaterials. Ceramic based biomaterials showed extreme superiority in terms of microstructural, tribological, and mechanical properties over metals and polymer-based biomaterials. In this study various ceramic based biomaterials, their applications and their future aspects have been discussed thoroughly. Important surface treatment methods to improve the tribological, microstructural, and mechanical characteristics have also been discussed.
