Summary:Composites are replacing the traditional materials recently because of its better strength to weight ratio. In present study, Aluminium composites are fabricated using stir casting technique. Al7075-SiC composites are fabricated at varying weight proportions of SiC ranging from 2 to 8% in steps of 2. The casted components are machined to ASTM standards for carrying out tensile, hardness and wear tests and the properties are evaluated. The specimens are found to have increasing tensile strength and hardness values until addition of SiC up to 6 wt%. Maximum tensile strength of 271 MPa is achieved for composite having 6 wt% SiC and the Brinell hardness number is found to be 118 for composite having 6 wt% SiC. Further addition of reinforcement resulted in decreasing hardness and tensile strengths. Wear rate of the composites decreased continuously with increasing weight percentage of reinforcement in the composite prepared.
