Summary:Herein we portrait CdSe quantum dots synthesized by an organometallic high temperature route using low toxic and cost effective oleylamine as the ligand molecule. The morphological and structural properties of the nanostructures were investigated using X-ray diffraction, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The optical properties were studied using UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The nanostructures grown were highly luminescent, spherical, monodisperse and highly crystalline. Further investigations incorporating the quantum dots in a solar cell is progressing.
