Summary:The addition of different proportions of modified pitch and phenol residue to coal blends were co-carbonized in an experimental 40kg coke oven. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the coke indicate that with increasing of modified pitch and phenol residue in coal blends, the crystallite height Lc increases, microcrystal layer distance d002 decreases. It demonstrates that the microcrystal structure of coke can be improved by adding modified pitch and phenol residue, and modified pitch is more effective than phenol residue to improve coke quality.The overall objective of the study is the utilization of lower rank coals and by-products in coking plants,in the making of metallurgical coke. It would have obvious economic benefits.
