Summary:•Simulations using CFD approach on open refrigerated display cabinet.•Different locations and distributions of orifices on perforated back panel have been discussed.•Orifices at lower positions are more appropriate for the temperature control of the food packages. The rapid development of science and technology has changed the way of life of human beings from the purchase of traditional market to modern supermarkets. The most important factor is that the refrigeration technology of food has been greatly improved. Therefore, it is quite significant to develop new or improve existing refrigeration on the effect of energy saving. The objective of this study was to establish Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models to predict and analyze the flow and temperature fields in the open refrigerated display cabinet with different parameters and design conditions, such as positions of orifices on perforated back panel, different properties of food packages. Different positions of orifices on perforated back panel would have a considerable influence on the temperature and flow fields in the open refrigerated display cabinet. For the case of the orifices, which were set on lower positions of perforated back panel, part of cold air would flow up along the food packages, as cold air flowed out of the orifices on perforated back panel. The other part would flow through the gap between the perforated back panel and the layer plates, in which food packaged were placed, and flow to other area in open refrigerated display cabinet. It is more appropriate for the temperature control of the overall food packages. Therefore, different position of the orifices on perforated back panel are quite important to the performance of the refrigerated display cabinet.
