Efficient preparation of 1,4,8-trimethylcyclam and its conversion into a thioalkyl-pendant pentadentate chelate

A facile synthesis of 1,4,8- trimethylcyclam and a thioalkylpendant derivative are reported, and the X- ray crystal structure of a nickel( II) complex illustrates structural consequences of appending the thiolate donor onto the macrocycle.
