Summary:This paper describes the construction of a highly reliable pulsed ultrasonic radar vehicle detector used in the measurement of roadway vehicular traffic. The system of this detector is constructed with three types of ultrasonic transducers and a single ultrasonic transceiver and has the following characteristics: 1) the standard detection zones where vehicle detection is desired reappear when transducers are exchanged without tuning of the transceiver, because particular interfaces are built into the transducers, and 2) vehicle detections are accurate because the gated receiver has the function of a follow-up control on a time base for atmospheric temperature variations and the detector's outputs are synchronized with the transmitting pulses.
