A NEW AND FACILE SYNTHESIS OF SULFONYL CHLORIDES

Several benzenesulfonyl and arylmethanesulfonyl chlorides 2 are synthesized in excellent yields by the aqueous chlorination of aryl (or benzyl) methoxymethyl sulfides 1. Functionalized sulfides 1 d-g can be prepared easily from bromophenyl methoxymethyl sulfides 1 b,c.
