Summary:The introduction of point-of-care NAATs, such as the Cepheid CT/NT Xpert® Rapid PCR test, directly into sexual health clinics has the potential to shorten the time to diagnosis and depending on the setting, result in rapid treatment thus limiting potential transmission in sexual networks (6). [...]repurposing antibiotic therapy to include novel combinations of older drugs such as gentamicin or gemifloxacin with azithromycin has proved to be promising (9). The design of a vaccine against N. gonorrhoeae has remained stymied on a number of issues (17). Since infection with N. gonorrhoeae does not raise a protective immune response and repeated infections do occur in humans, there are no defined correlates of protection for use in a vaccine design program (17). Overall, a multi-pronged approach requiring the efforts of diagnostic laboratories, attending physicians, public health policies, pharmaceutical industry and basic research is required to effectively meet the challenge of containing the growing global threat of multidrug-resistant N. gonorrhoeae.
