An Ordering Transition in the Turbulent Flow of Helium II

High speed movies (3000 Frames/sec) of a high velocity planar jet of superfluid forced through a sharp tipped orifice will be shown. It will be seen that such a jet undergoes a reversible transition from turbulent flow at low velocity and heat flux, to quiescent flow at higher velocity and heat flux...

Summary:High speed movies (3000 Frames/sec) of a high velocity planar jet of superfluid forced through a sharp tipped orifice will be shown. It will be seen that such a jet undergoes a reversible transition from turbulent flow at low velocity and heat flux, to quiescent flow at higher velocity and heat flux. The velocity, heat flux, and geometrical characteristics of this transition are discussed.
