Summary:Comments are offered on Leon J. Goldstein's review (see IRPS No. 26/85a34877) of Frederick Olafson's The Dialectic of Action: A Philosophical Interpretation of History and the Humanities (Chicago, 1979), in which Olafson criticizes Arthur Danto's Analytical Philosophy of History (Cambridge, 1968). Olafson argued that retrospective narrative description of past events must be subordinate to representation of the intentionality of agents' meanings available to past actors. Goldstein misrepresents Olafson's position as one of unqualified individualism, & fails to consider the actual content of the arguments. An attempt is made to correct these failings. W. H. Stoddard
