Summary:Abstract The Scandinavian Association for the Study of Pain (SASP) was founded in Stockholm December 1976. SASP became an extremely important network for pain researchers and pain clinicians in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, in particular because at that time each country had only a handful of pain-interested clinicians and researchers. Iceland joined the four other Nordic countries in SASP in 1995. Interest in the pain field has increased steadily over the years, most recently with the formation of national societies in the Nordic countries. National pain societies have become important for the development of health policies and pain medicine in each country. Over the years there has been close contact and collaboration between scientists and clinicians in the area of pain in the five Nordic countries. With the formation of national chapters there is now a need to keep the strong bonds between pain interested health care providers and scientists in the Nordic countries. The Interim board of a new pain research network with its chairperson in the five Nordic countries have supported, by mandate from former SASP members, a decision to establish a Scandinavian Journal of Pain.
