Summary: | Clostridium acetobutylicum was grown on a variety of different media and assayed for enhanced butanol production. Butanol values of about 90% of theoretical were obtained when glucose was used as the substrate. Five other sugars were assayed and the order of butanol production using these substrates was cellobiose > mannose > arabinose > xylose > galactose. The addition of calcium carbonate to the media to enhance xylose utilized was beneficial although lower butanol values were obtained. |
