Summary:This paper presents an analysis of the directand quadrature-axis inductances for linear tubular actuators with permanent magnet arrays, highlighting and featuring how they are affected by the end effects. A semi-analytical and an experimental analysis are performed to prove the influence of end effects on selfand mutual inductances. The synchronous parameters, i.e., dand q-axis inductances of the actuator, are determined using a semi-analytical method and an experimental method. Once the synchronous parameters are all identified, high performance control methods (such as direct force control and vector control) may be implemented.
