Summary:The Neosho madtom is a federally endangered fish that is endemic to the Neosho River basin in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Morphological features that distinguish this species from other madtom fish species, its historic range, abundance, preferred habitat, ecology, and known reproductive habits are summarized. This species is threatened by impoundments that inhibit migration and destroy habitat. Pollution from urban areas, agriculture, metal and gravel mining, and industry lower the water quality in the remaining rivers where this species is found. A 5 yr moratorium on gravel mining and population monitoring are among the conservation measures being used to protect this madtom species. Other suggestions are offered as well.
