Summary: | Protoplast fusion between the virus-infected species
Aspergillus niger, a glucoamylase producer, and the virus-free species
A. oryzae and
A. ficuum was carried out. The presence or absence of polyhedral virus particles, of 28–33 nm diam, in their hybrids and segregants of both hybrids and heterokaryons were detected by means of electron microscopy, immune double-diffusion assay and gel electrophoresis. Virus particles were present in hybrids of both combinations and in most of the segregants, except those which resembled the original virus-free phenotype. Comparison of glucoamylase production by parental strains, their hybrids and segregants indicated that the hybrid expressed the advantage of high yield of enzyme and growth rate. |
