Summary:Colonoscopy has been applied in the diagnosis and treatment of acute colonic pseudoobstruction seen in post-attack of cerebral infarction (Ogilvie's syndrome). The patent lumen is an important evidence of colonic pseudo-obstruction. Colonoscopy is more available to confirm the patency of the lumen than barium enema because no change of positioning the patient is required. Moreover, suction technique of the colonoscopy is very effective to depress the intraluminal pressure and prevent the impending perforation. Improvement of instrument and technique have led colonoscopy to be an easy and safe examination. Nevertheless, during examination especially in such a poor-conditioned patient as colonic psedo-obstruction in cerebral infarction careful observation is very important and a skillful technique is necessary.
