Summary:The use of microtomy for preparing very hard and heterogeneous material for TEM was demonstrated. The disadvantages of the ion-beam thinning method are outlined. Microtomy was carried out firstly by embedding a level-edged single-filament composite. The next stage was the preparation of a truncated pyramid exactly centred in relation to the end of the sample. Several single-filament SiC composites were successfully prepared. This method allows the observation of brittle interphase zones, the role of which may be important as regards mechanical properties. 3 refs.
