Summary:Previously abstracted from original as item 9312-31-4739. Results of an experimental study of the effect of scandium additions on the structure and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys are reported. It is shown, in particular, that the optimal Sc content in Al alloys is 0.1-0.3% and that simultaneous alloying by zirconium (0.05-0.15%) enhances the positive effect of Sc on the structure and properties of Al alloys. The most favorable effect of Sc (together with Zr) is achieved for alloys that do not contain components binding Sc into nonsoluble phases (e.g., Al--Mg, Al--Zn--Mg, and Al--Mg--Li). Al--Zn--Mg--Cu and Al--Cu--Li can also be alloyed by Sc if the amount of copper is limited.
