Summary:Distributed feedback fiber laser (DFB FL) sensors have been the subject of considerable research interest over the past decade, due primarily to their remarkable inherent strain sensitivity. Recent research has led to significant advances in both fundamental understanding of DFB FL devices and in practical performance outcomes in demanding real-world applications. Here, we provide an overview of the basic operating principles of wavelength division multiplexed DFB FL sensor systems and review the underlying theory of DFB FL.
