Summary:Although disc brakes equip mass produced vehicles, drum brakes are still applied on medium and heavy duty vehicles. However, both exhibit high level of brake noises which the squeal is the most uncomfortable and one of the reasons behind high warranty costs. Hence the brake noise prediction method has prompted significant efforts to develop numerical models using the finite element method. This intends to analyse design parameters of a heavy duty automotive drum brake using its parametric finite element model composed by drum, shoes and frictional linings. Moreover, it is conducted static calculations to get a pre-stress state around which is computed the complex eigenvalues. At the end is presented the best material parameters to obtain low squeal occurrence.
