Ultrasonic assessment of Portland cement at the early stages of hydration

A technique based on the reflection of ultrasonic waves in a semi-infinite mode was applied to a fresh Portland cement paste (water/cement ratio = 0.4 in weight) when it transformed from a viscous liquid to a solid phase within a few hours. Summary:A technique based on the reflection of ultrasonic waves in a semi-infinite mode was applied to a fresh Portland cement paste (water/cement ratio = 0.4 in weight) when it transformed from a viscous liquid to a solid phase within a few hours. The changes in the ultrasonic wave velocity allow the detection of the cement transformation from a liquid to a solid. Shrinkage is also associated with this modification. Marked changes of the reflection coefficient occur later, from 510 to 600 min, and are possibly connected with interface phenomena which depend on the chemical composition of the cement. 10 refs.
