Summary: | The UV-visible spectra of nitrous acid in aqueous solutions and in other solvents (methanol, acetonitrile and benzene) were obtained and a specific method for nitrite detection was developed. The hyperfine structure observed in all these spectra was tentatively attributed to vibrational coupling. The unique characteristics of the spectrum in acidic solution allowed nitrite to be determined at 0.00003 mol per litre in the presence of 0.1 mol nitrate per litre in solution. Through spectrophotometric and potentiometric measurements, the pKa value for nitrous acid was calculated to be 2.3 plus/minus 0.2. |
