Properties of magnesia-stabilized zirconia powders prepared by a combustion route

Magnesia-stabilised tetragonal zirconia was prepared using a simple, safe and instantaneous combustion process. Calcination of ZrO2-7 mol% MgO precipitated MgO and m-ZrO2, indicating the metastable nature of combustion-synthesised ZrO2-MgO powders. The cold-pressed sample sintered at 1300 C for 3 h...

Summary:Magnesia-stabilised tetragonal zirconia was prepared using a simple, safe and instantaneous combustion process. Calcination of ZrO2-7 mol% MgO precipitated MgO and m-ZrO2, indicating the metastable nature of combustion-synthesised ZrO2-MgO powders. The cold-pressed sample sintered at 1300 C for 3 h gave a dense body (greater than 98% of the theoretical density) with a fine-grained morphology. 15 refs.
